Some of the goals for the redesign of this site were to increase search engine performance and overall usability. To address the former, we took the site out of a pure Flash environment and moved to a more traditional HTML-based content structure. This, along with the application of some SEO techniques, began to improve the site’s search performance. To address usability, we created a user account system which keeps the user logged in while visiting the site. One of the benefits this offers is the ability for the site to auto-fill forms to save time. In addition, the site contains content which is reserved for registered users.
Because of the “macro” nature of this site, it was important that the various sections of the site be easily identifiable at a glance. To this end, each subsection within the site has its own color scheme which gives a unique identity, while the graphic and layout themes keep them all part of the whole.
The navigation interface was designed in Adobe Flex, and interfaces with the site through PHP. Slideshows in various sections of the site are also Flex-based, using and XML data structure for the slide URLS and hyperlinks.
