Artist Statement
I am an artist.
On the surface, this sentence seems very elementary, perhaps reminiscent of early primary school readings from our childhoods. In terms of abstract truth however, I find these four words to be anything but simple. They convey a depth of meaning that contributes to my very sense of being. They are more than a simple description of occupation or diversion; more than that, they are at least in part a declaration of my identity. It's an acknowledgement of the symbiotic relationship that I believe exists between my environment and me as inspiration and I seek and find each other in places both common and uncommon.
Inspiration is—in its most general sense—a gift from God, given to humanity as a means through which He can speak to us on levels that no other being can. In our communication with one another and toward God, we are painfully limited and finite, but God's communication toward us is boundless. One flash of inspiration, one word from Heaven, can contain more expression than one could adequately articulate in a lifetime.
As it relates to art, I believe that inspiration contains within it the defining vision of what it is meant to become within the context of the artist's chosen medium. One of the delicate beauties of the creative process however, is that when inspiration flows through the artist, neither can leave the creative process without being altered in some way by its contact with the other. A wondrous fusion takes place and art is born. A metaphorical union of humanity and divinity, it contains elements of both, yet exhibits its own inherent identity and essence.
As an artist, I seek to capture the vision that inspiration imparts and manifest it for anyone who may view my work. My desire is that as I attempt to articulate the vision of my work, others may see it and be touched in some way by it. Moreover, I hope that any who see my work might be somehow inspired to press through the veil of natural understanding and take their first steps into a larger world illuminated by the Creator of the Universe.
